One place that we felt we had missed during our long adventure in 2022/23 was Shetland, the northernmost part of the British Isles. We spent some time in The Orkneys, just of the north coast of Scotland, but didn't venture further to Shetland. This was our chance to fill that gap.
Of course, we were in The Orkneys in summer, so our visit to Shetland wasn't only to experience a new destination, but to find out what winter near the Arctic is all about. Suffice to say we got more than a taste of what wind and cold really is.

What beautiful photos, but what terrible weather. Was this unusual weather for the time of year you were visiting? If it’s the norm, hats off to the locals for finding a way to make it through the winter.
No, the weather is often like this. Admittedly, we did encounter a storm, but they seem to be pretty frequent and this one wasn’t unusually bad. It was definitely cold, but it was the wind that made the biggest impression. When we picked up the car we were warned to always park into the wind. Opening the door with the wind behind is almost certain to result in it being ripped out of your grip and then smashing the hinges. Although local car hires come with full comprehensive, no excess insurance, it doesn’t cover busted hinges.
