After the stay in London over Christmas and New Year Jan and Chris took to the air to fly to Munich. They met their friends before travelling with them on the train to Schliersee in the foothills of the Bavarian Alps.

  • Hi Chris and Jan. Two questions for you. Firstly, if you were to compare your trips to Bavaria during the summer and the winter, which season do you prefer? I’m guessing the summer because of your love for walking? Or is the skiing of particular appeal? Have you got another ski trip lined up?

My second question… You didn’t have a lot of luck with the hospitality this time around. Was it the same during your first trip to the region? If not, I wonder if the locals prefer the warmth or the summer months!

    • Schliersee and surrounds are very pretty in winter, and offer something we will never see in Australia. But the cold and the snow does limit options a bit, unless you are here just for the skiing. Jan would be happy to come back to ski again, but Chris would have to search for some easier slopes. On balance, we preferred our summer visit because we were able to do some of the spectacular walks through the surrounding hills.

It would be easier here if we had more German language to work with, but that can be said of many places. We don’t recall the same problems from the last visit. Perhaps it was our Scottish friends who may have been a little more prepared to answer back :-). Lizzie and Colin spent some time living in Vienna and were more accustomed to the way the British are seen and treated, and less prepared to put up with it.
