Our Indian travels continue, moving southwards from Chennai to the lovely former French colony of Puducherry. Following almost 300 years of French rule, Puducherry was only transferred back to Indian control in the mid-20th century.
Today, it retains much of its European heritage. This is being strengthened due to a great deal of restoration work underway in the French Quarter.
We loved the few days we had there, and it was certainly a very different experience to every other Indian city we have been to.
Click on the photo to visit Puducherry with us. We hope you like it as much as we did.

Hi Chris and Jan. A couple of questions.
The first… You mentioned the clothes shopping. Was the product good quality for the locals, and did you fill your suitcases, or was it more stuff for the tourists (i.e. made cheaply to last one or two wears only)?
The second… I just looked on a map to see where Puducherry is located and noted its proximity to Sri Lanka. Did you ever consider heading to Sri Lanka as part of this trip given how close you were?
Generally, the clothing in India is both cheap and good quality. The trousers we picked up in Kolkata look like they’ll last for years. The boutiques in Puducherry are a cut above, though. European quality along with European prices. There is a small chain there called Highdesign that has clothing that wouldn’t be out of place in a boutique in Melbourne’s Collins St. They also have a lot of very good leather travel bags. We saw a very nice one in the style of a retro Gladstone bag. The price tag on that was just over AUD1,000.
We had a short layover in Sri Lanka on the way to Kerala in 2017, but didn’t leave the airport. We’ve sketched out a 3-week trip there, but haven’t been able to fit it in yet. But it’s on the list.
