The next stage of our journey after the Himalayas was in the old British Colonial capital of Kolkata, formerly known as Calcutta.

We expected one of the big capital cities in India to present a different experience to that of the previous week, but we weren't quite prepared for just how different. We had visited Delhi and Mumbai on previous trips, but these hadn't prepared us for the mayhem that is Kolkata.

We had some good experiences, including a cricket game at Eden Gardens, and another food tour. Click on the photo to the right to travel there with us.

  • Hi Chris and Jan. The colours in the photos make the city look incredibly vivid. Is that the way it seems when you are there, or is that just a nod to your wonderful photography skills?

    • Our “wonderful” photography skills were seriously challenged later in the trip when trying to capture the wildlife at the tiger reserve. It was much easier to showcase the colours in Kolkata.

The first thing we always say about our visits to India is the that country is a full-on assault on all the senses. The colours are striking, most notably the clothing worn by the women. The fruit stand and the spice bowls at the street stalls add to the vibrancy of the traffic noise and the press of people.
