It took a full day of driving to get from The Orkneys to The Isle of Skye, the biggest island in the Inner Hebrides group off the west coast of Scotland. The mid-morning ferry took us back to the mainland, then we drove back through some of the country we had seen around Inverness before arriving at our cottage in a remote part of Skye.

Skye has become a very popular destination for travellers because of the amazing scenery and good tourist infrastructure. There are also some classic day walks that we wanted to do. The weather was pretty awful while we were there, but it didn't stop us completing the three walks we most wanted to do. We hope you enjoy the scenery, and don't get as wet as we did!

  • The photos are stunning! Wow what incredible natural beauty. A couple of questions. a) Is the isle close enough to the mainland for a bridge crossing or is everything done by ferries? b) You mention there were a number of walkers around. Did you get a sense of where they were from? i.e. local Scottish folk out for the day or travellers from far and wide like yourselves?

    • 100% of the praise for the Skye photos has to go to Jan. When we got to our next destination at Lake Menteith I realised that I had lost a USB stick with all the photos I had taken with the camera. All we had were the ones Jan had taken on her phone. The photos in all the Sways are a collection of the best of those taken by both of us, but for Skye they are all Jan’s.

Skye is joined to the mainland by a bridge that is about 500 metres long. The main road then runs the full length of the eastern shore, with smaller access roads running to places on the west coast. There are fewer settlements on the east side, and fewer in the centre of Skye, but the east is where much of the great scenery is.

Skye brings walkers from all over the world. At a guess about half were from Scotland and England, we spoke with people from the US, Canada and across Europe. It really is one of the world’s great destinations for walking, as the photos show, and people come there from everywhere.
