Following our fantastic New Year treat at The King's lodge, we travelled back to the heart of Dracula Country, Brasov in Transylvania. Brasov is a smallish city with a compact old centre and plenty of opportunities for side trips.

We were lucky to be there when the Christmas markets were still going, brightening up the city with their lights and bringing lots of people into the centre after dark. We managed some day trips, did some walks and saw some more awesome castles, including one at the centre of the Dracula legend.

Please settle in and enjoy roaming this part of Transylvania with us.

  • The names of the places you visited seem to reflect themes from different cultures, e.g. Neustadt is German a German word I think? Does the area reflect a blend of things you’ve seen before or is there a distinctive a separate Romanian feel to the region? On a more serious note, Kate wonders how many miles you needed to walk to work off the kilos from that monstrous sized ice cream we saw you eating in one of the photos!

    • Another insightful question, Mark. For centuries, Romania has been subject to changing borders and ruling influences. Invading armies from all directions and shifting allegiances on the part of local ruling families have shaped the culture. Many towns have been known by three different names, one Romanian, one Germanic from periods of Austrian rule and one Hungarian, when the balance during the Austro-Hungarian Empire tilted eastwards. There was an evident pride in the Romanian roots, particularly in Transylvania.

One thing that became very clear, we know almost nothing about the 600 years or so of history here during the rule of the Hapsburgs. I’ve downloaded an audiobook to try to pick up some of it.

As for the ice creams, I’m sure it is from an abundance of politeness that Kate didn’t refer to other photos of me where it is evident that the ice creams are winning over the walks 🙁

  • Hi Jan and Chris,

Your adventures look amazing .A little chilly in some but you are well layered with warm clothes.

    • The warm clothing has been much needed, although this winter in Europe has been unusually warm. No snow, but temperatures just above zero combined with some moisture about has made it feel colder. Certainly not Cairns weather.
