Our journey of discovery through Transylvania continues with visits to two cities that are on all the must-see lists for visitors to Romania. Sibiu and Sighisoara are each just a couple of hours on a train from Brasov, although each on a different main line.

Negotiating the Cold War era train system that still operates in Romania introduced an added dimension to this part of our travels, and has added another memory for us to look back on in the future. We're sure it will be funny one day!

The two cities were worth it, though, and it's not surprising they feature in tourist itineraries. We hope you enjoy reading the story of this part of our adventure.

  • The walking tour audios must make such a big difference when you are visiting these lovely towns. Are they always available? Is the quality to a consistent and high standard? And another comment from Kate. Apparently Vlad the Impailer only started skewering people in his mid-30’s, demonstrating that you are never too old to pick up a new habit. (Thanks for your contribution Kate!).

    • Vlad must have condensed his impaling career into a short time then. I think he died in a battle when he was only 39. Quite the achievement to have been remembered for so long after only four or five years at it.

The audiowalk apps have been great. There are plenty available for download. We have been using Rick Steves’ Audio Europe, Izi, GPS My City and Smart Guide. Rick Steves is by far the best, but most of the walks are in Western European tourist hotspots. His are always free. We use the free versions of the others, but they are a bit limited. The paid versions provide better maps and guidance, but the free versions are OK to get around, sometimes using Google Maps as a supplement. Rick’s are audio recordings of his voice and a local guide, but the others are computer-generated voices that read a written on-screen text. More than anything, they give us some structure to get from place to place in a new city.
