Lake Balaton, in the west of Hungary, is one of the country's most popular tourist destinations. Within an hour's drive of Budapest, the lake attracts day-trippers and people after a short break. They come for the scenery, the water sports, the cycling, and to swim in the thermal baths at Heviz.

We had another reason to come as well. Jan's father was born, and grew up, in a tiny village just across the border with Croatia, called Kotoriba. This was her chance to connect with part of her heritage, and put some context around the stories she had heard while growing up herself.

  • What a wonderful opportunity for Jan to visit her heritage lands. I did a similar trip with my brother back in 2017 (interestingly to a town less than 300 km’s away from where this sway was made). As we learn from Australia’s traditional custodians, humanities connection to land runs very deep. As an aside, I note the photos of beautiful flower beds in many of your recent posts. Are they everywhere throughout the region, or have you just shared some of the random (but isolated) floral arrangements?

    • It wasn’t a day out to one of the great tourist destinations in Europe, but it was still one of our best days so far. Jan can now put some images to the stories she has been told her whole life.

We are into Spring, and there are colours everywhere! The cities and the private gardens are all on display wherever we go.
