The final stop on our second time in the Schengen Zone was Budapest, the capital of Hungary, and one of the world's truly great cities. With its rich history, classical and modern cultural elements, amazing architecture, and the Danube River flowing through it, Budapest proved to be another highlight of our trip so far.

We were joined again by Natalie and Dom, who took advantage of a bank holiday weekend, and some bargain flights. There is so much to see and do in this city, and between the four of us, we managed to cover most of the must-see attractions. We hope you like what you see, and make a point of getting there yourself one day.

  • The photos of Budapest look lively and lovely. In the back of my mind however I reflect on Hungary only being released from Communist rule (and the associated economic challenges) around 1990. Did you get the sense the city was prosperous / thriving, or was there a sense of a slow recovery from its more recent history?

    • Another great observation from you, Mark. Slow recovery seems to be the way. But I think there is another factor at play. I don’t know a lot about European politics, but there is an ongoing tussle between the Hungarian Government and the EU leadership. Brussels is concerned about some changes to democratic institutions in the country, and have been withholding some funding payments.

The infrastructure around Lake Balaton wasn’t as well-developed as we expected, given it’s such a tourist centre. But Budapest is in good condition, very clean and the footpaths are in good condition. There is a lot of work being done in the Castle area, and that will make an already attractive precinct even better.
