The next stop on our road trip was just a two hour drive from Winton. The outback town of Longreach is a centre supporting the grazing and wool growing stations in western Queensland. It lies on the Thomson River, about 700 kilometres inland from Rockhampton.
Longreach is home to two tourist attractions, The Australian Stockman's Hall of Fame, and the Qantas Founders Museum. We had heard about both of these and wanted to see them for ourselves.

Hi Chris and Jan. I’m trying to picture your trips through Europe with different towns, countries and cultures every 100 km by contrast to the long drives and the red dirt of the outback. Such different experiences. Do you have a preference?
Yes they are very different experiences. The ever changing landscapes of Europe present something new and interesting around every corner. But the endless expanses of outback Australia are a marvel in themselves.
That said, we probably set ourselves a couple of days that were too long on this trip, especially with having to add packing and then setting up camp at each end. After Melbourne we will be staying in roofed accommodation all the way, so that should be better.
