We have a new story about the last part of of road trip to Melbourne and back. We connected with the Queensland coast at the Alexandra Headland on the Sunshine Coast. From there we coast-hopped our way back home to Palm Cove.
Most of our stops on this part of the trip were really just stopovers on the way home. Except for Airlie Beach where we did some touristy things again.

I remember your trip in 2021 where you were considering where to settle (before choosing Cairns). Having re-visited most of these places, if you needed to leave Cairns now for whatever reason, where would the 2026 version of Chris and Jan choose to live? Is this different to what you thought in 2021?
That’s a great question. We have been talking about that ourselves. The places we thought we could live were Sunshine Coast (south end around Caloundra), Yeppoon, Airlie Beach, and Mission Bay. But we now realise that where we have landed at Palm Cove is probably better than all of them.
We sometimes call ourselves the “5-year people”, living for about 5 years in one place. But we may be 10-year people where we are. We have friends who have just sold up in Yungaburra, just up in the ranges above us. They are moving to an over-50s development near Caloundra, so when we get itchy feet again, that’s probably where we will look.
