We have just spent three weeks travelling through Greece's Peloponnese Peninsula. What an amazing experience! We have encountered so much history and legends, and did some great walks through spectacular scenery. The region is much more mountainous than we expected, and car journeys between places never went by a direct route anywhere.

We tried to fit everything into one big story, but couldn't because of Sway's limits on the number of photos we could upload. So, this time, we have split the story into two halves, one for the east of the peninsula and one for the west.

There is a lot to tell about this part of our journey, so make yourself comfortable, get a drink, and settle in while you travel with us again.

    • Thanks Lynne. We are just at the end of this Europe leg, and will fly back to London again in a couple of days. Scotland and Ireland, here we come!

  • What an wonderful part of the world. If Kate and I get to Greece again, we’ll definitely head out to this region (we are one of those couples whose previous Greek holiday was limited to Athens and the islands). My only concern is for your host Dimitri. Given the breadth of this Sway’s readership, he’ll undoubtedly be caught out by the authorities for taking you across to the Lighthouse without permission!

    • I think Dimitri is safe enough. I doubt any of the 2 or 3 site views a day are coming from anyone in the Greek government!

Almost all travellers to Greece go to Athens and the islands, so you are in the majority. But we’ve discovered some other parts of the country that are very much worth the effort. And getting around by train or bus is quite easy. Nowhere is more than a few hours from Athens, and most are not much more than one hour.

We visited outside the tourist season, but I can’t imagine any of the places we went being as crowded as Athens or the main islands in summer.
