After leaving Carnarvon Gorge our adventure continued to the south. We left our home state of Queensland and began the trek through outback New South Wales.
This part of the trip started in the black opal mining ton of Lightning Ridge and ended in the very interesting and historic city of Broken Hill. There were plenty of things to see and do along the way.

Thanks Chris & Jan. What a fascinating few days you’ve had in outback NSW! If someone had less time than you’ve had for this trip, which part of this Sway showed ‘must see’ locations, and which were perhaps of less interest?
Broken Hill is definitely worth the journey. We really only scratched the surface there. The mining and labour history has played such an important part in how post-Goldrush Australia was shaped.
Lightning Ridge is more an icon to be ticked off by the Grey Nomads on their big lap. We didn’t feel it was inherently worth the drive there. Cobar was always just a place to break the drive west. More of a local town than a place to visit.
So, with limited time, fly into Melbourne and then travel to Broken Hill via Mildura. The next post will tell you more about why Mildura is also worth visiting.
